Aviators,
We have recently been made aware of concerns regarding transgender students using the restroom of their gender identity. We understand parents' concerns and would like to speak on the matter.
At Alliance City Schools, it is our mission to establish a safe, positive and engaging learning environment for all of our students so they can learn, grow and thrive. The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights (OCR), and the US Supreme Court have interpreted Title IX's prohibition on gender discrimination to include discrimination based on gender identity and therefore schools that receive federal funding are required to allow students to use restrooms that correspond with their gender identity. As a district, we firmly stand by our policy of non-discrimination.
Currently, restrooms at Alliance High School are not considered gender neutral. When a student identifies as transgender, we follow, and have followed for many years, a documented process which encourages their parent/guardian’s involvement before the student can use the restroom of their identity.
We recognize that this is a sensitive issue that may provoke diverse opinions in our school community. However, we will continue to follow the law while working to foster an inclusive atmosphere. We want to assure you that all students are required to abide by the student code of conduct, which also outlines appropriate use of restrooms including decency and respect of other students. If the code of conduct is violated by any student, we will address the issue according to district policies.
We strive for our students to be both safe and comfortable in our schools. If a student is not comfortable using the restroom, for any reason, we are more than willing to discuss it and work together on possible solutions.
If you have any questions or concerns, we encourage you to reach out to the district offices at 330.821.2100.
