The AHS PENOHIO TEAM competed in the PenOhio Tournament held at Kent State Stark yesterday and made Alliance proud!.Julia Schwartz won 1ST place in the JV Division and our JV team placed 3rd overall in a very competitive field. That team was comprised of Aleigh Johnson, Julia Schwartz, Daniele Bush, Janel Lilly, McKenzie Schoolcraft, and Riley Tucker, topping 10 other schools.

Parkway Poetry Cafe With the lights dimmed, coffee served and students a little nervous, a Poetry Cafe at Parkway Elementary School on Friday gave students the opportunity to perform their poetry to friends, family and peers. Students have been learning about different types of poetry and tried their hand at writing one of each kind of poem. At the poetry cafe students performed their pieces publically for the first time. Nerves ran high, but the experience of speaking publicly and getting over those nerves is part of the lesson, Principal Cory Mueller said. Parents and guests were welcome to stay in various rooms and student groups moved room to room to perform their pieces. Coffee and desserts were served to make it more like a poetry cafe. The students did a great job overcoming nerves, and putting their work out there for the public to hear!

Cutting hair is an artform and Alliance High School and Career Center Cosmetology students were privileged on Friday to get some tips and tricks on their art form from a professional and haircut artist Donovan Anderson. Elizabeth Cadile, Career Center Cosmetology instructor brought Anderson in to teach students his craft of cutting men’s hair cuts. Students get plenty of lessons and experience on women’s hair cuts but could use extra practice with men’s cuts, especially the ins and outs of using clippers. Anderson is a 2013 graduate of West Branch High School and was inspired by Cadile to become a hairstylist. He attended Paul Mitchell school after graduation and currently works for Chad Anthony's Salon in Streetsboro and is a Johnny B. hairstylist and teacher. During his tutorial he gave Alliance Graduate Luke Kelley a hair cut, showing students how to get a close shave and a smooth fade to create a trendy hairstyle. He said telling students about the tips and tricks he has learned in the business makes him feel like he is helping people. “I’ve always wanted to help people and this is a way I can do that. I can pass my knowledge to them and fuel that passion they have,” he said. He explained how the techniques students are learning now can be adapted to best suit each client and hairstyle. “Giving a haircut is like tailoring a tuxedo, it’s different for each person,” he said. High School junior Juila Sitosky said just watching Anderson cut Kelley’s hair helped her to feel more confident in giving a men’s haircut. “We learn about men’s hair cutting but we have never gone that in-depth. Watching him use the clippers and his blending techniques really helped,” she said. In the spring students have the opportunity to go and take their state license test in Columbus. The high school Career/Tech class has a history of a 100 percent passage rate. Students in the cosmetology program take appointments from the public in their salon to gain experience and charge a discounted rate. To make an appointment call 330-829-2245.

Mini versions of famous Americans filled the gymnasium and cafeteria at Rockhill Elementary School on Friday as the students put on their annual Wax Museum for friends, family and teachers. Oprah Winfrey as she appeared in “A Wrinkle In Time,” Laura Ingalls Wilder and Neil Armstrong were among the unique group of portrayed famous figures. Students have spent weeks researching a famous American of their choice. They learned about biographies, created timelines of the person’s life, and dressed as the person on Friday to stand and act as a “wax figure” of them. They practiced speeches and staying “in character” in class as well. The wax museum hits on many different learning standards with one project. During the wax museum parents go through and push a button to hear students present their rehearsed speech. Administration and teachers also attended the wax museum. Andrea Offenebcher, literacy and numeracy teacher said the wax museum is student favorite part is learning interesting facts about their person of choice. “The students have loved it. They go through the hallways telling us interesting facts about their famous people. It’s a great learning experience for them and us,” she said. The wax museum has been a tradition at Parkway and Rockhill for years and is a memorable part of the year for many students.

The threat on social media has been found to be false. The lockdown has been lifted and students will be released from school at the normal time.

Due to a threat seen on social media specific to AHS we have decided to lock down the school to allow Alliance Police Department time to investigate the situation. As soon as we receive information we will release it. As a safety precaution all other buildings are in shelter in place which means no one is allowed in or out.

From Superintendent Jeffery Talbert's office: In the Alliance City School District the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. This morning, on Bus 5, one of the kindergarten students brought a gun onto the bus in their backpack. At the time, there was only one other student on the bus and they showed the gun to that student. That student reported it to the bus driver, who immediately stopped the bus and safely took the backpack and kept it in her possession. I would like to thank the student who was brave enough to report the gun, as well as the bus driver for handling the situation calmly and safely. I would also like to thank the Alliance Police for assisting in this situation and working to keep our students safe. Again, the safety and well-being of our students is our top priority.

Students were evacuated from the High School building today after a fire alarm went off at 10:05 a.m. The Alliance Fire Department and staff assessed the situation as students waited outside for 15 minutes. The building was determined to be safe and secure and students have returned to class.
