A group of Rockhill third grade students enjoyed a pasta party with homemade cavatelli and sauce with Mrs. Searfoss.  This was a culminating activity after reading the book Granny Torelli Makes Soup.  In this story by Eileen Spinelli, the main characters learned how to make homemade soup and pasta with Granny Torelli while she shared valuable life lessons with them.  John Babb, Dallas Curtice, Cicero Davis, Frankie Dennison, Kenny Johnson, Merric Miller and Khylar Nordquest worked on literacy skills while enjoying this realistic fiction selection, and also discovered they love cavatelli pasta. #Acspresents

Jordan Schwartz competed this past weekend in the State GEOGRAPHY BEE Competition held in Columbus. The State Geography Bee went very well for Jordan on Friday. He was one of 14 students (out of 101 students competing) to get all eight of his questions correct in the preliminary round. Unfortunately, he was one of four students eliminated in the tie-breaker round that followed, so he finished tied for 11th and just missed the 10-person final round held on the big stage. Bee officials said it is the only the 2nd or 3rd time in 27 years that a perfect 8-for-8 didn't automatically qualify for the 10-person final. Indeed, in our 3 years of being at the State Geo Bee only 29 of 301 total competitors have gotten 8's (7 two years ago, 8 last year, and 14 this year.). This year's champion was again Saket Pochiraju from Lewis Center, who has won it three years in a row. (He's an 8th grader and he won't be back, but his little brother made it to State as a 4th grader this year!)

Northside teachers are committed to designing engaging lessons for students. Recently, teachers focused on affiliation, designing work that encourages and supports opportunities for students to work interdependently with others.  Fifth grade classes participated in various “escape rooms” as part of their test prep for the upcoming AIR assessment. ELA classes escaped from Planet Emoji while math classes escaped from Emoji Island. Both of these activities presented students with 4 challenges focused around the content area.  Students worked with their group, using one another’s strengths, to complete the challenges. In music class, students created a three-part harmony with boomwhackers. Within each small group, students were assigned a specific note to play within their group’s melody. After working together and practicing in their small groups, the entire class joined together and created a beautiful three-part harmony.

Adam from the Huston-Brumbaugh Nature Center visited the kindergarten children at AELS this morning. He shared information about how to tell which animals are insects. We learned that insects have 3 body parts, 6 legs, antenna, many can fly, some are easy to see, others are camouflaged making it difficult for them to be seen. At the end of the program, we were given an opportunity to touch a living insect, a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach!
